Film Production / Distribution / Exhibition

PRODUCTION

Production Companies Job (How does the production company engage with others?)

•  Finding the idea

•  Writing the script

•  Pitching it to a studio

•  Setting a budget

•  Casting stars and employing a crew

•  Filming

•  Editing

Questions that production companies got for the film maker to be interested in producing there film. (What would make a company want to finance.)

•  Is the films storyline similar to other films that have made money recently?

•  Does it offer easily selling points?

•  Are there obvious marketing spin offs to give added publicity?

•  Is the star popular?

•  Had the director had previous successes?

Production Risks

•  What level of audience will it attract?

•  Is it marketable?

•  Level of funding necessary?

•  Will the funding make a profitable return?

Digital Production

Non digital

What is a non-digital film?

•  Traditionally films  were made up images printed on to acetate negatives.

•  These are then "spliced" together to form a reel of film.

•   These are then feed through a projector at a constant speed of 24 frames a second which

makes  the pictures appear to be moving.

•  This is known as analogue

Digital Cinema - Production

Advantages of Digital Production.

•  Digital camcorders using a high-definition formal called HD-CAM are much cheaper then standard

film cameras.

•  New digital camera technology rivals traditional film for quality.

•  High quality film production is now far more accessible to film makers outside of the major

studios.

Digital Cinema - Distribution

Advantages to Digital Distribution.

•  Digital films are basically big computer files

•   Can be written to DVD-ROM

•  Sent via broadband

•  Transmitted via satellite

•  Virtually no shipping costs

•  Not much more expensive to show in 100 cinemas as 1

Exhibition is a good analogue film projector produces a clear, crisp vibrant image but every time

the print is projected the film is damaged. A digital projector produces high quality image and sound

every time. The 1000th view is as good as the first! A digital projector does not need a trained projectionist.

Digital Cinema - Exhibition

Advantages to Digital Exhibition

•  A digital projector does not need a trained projectionist!

•  With a film reel, once it begins playing it can not be stopped. If there is a problem with the print it is

very problematic to re-stat the screening.

•  Cinemas are looking to run from "hubs" meaning the projection for each screen is centralisted.

DISTRIBUTION

•  The distribution phase of the film industry is a highly competitive business of launching and sustaining films in the "market place"

•  You must remember that the film industry is a business and the films are products to be marketed

and sold.

•  Every film has its own distribution plan to ensure it reaches the right audiences.

Film Distribution Marketing

•  In starting to plan a marketing campaign, the film distributor has to decide how it will present a film to a potential audience.

•  They need to decide what sets the film apart from all the other films that are released - they look for a film's 'unique selling point' (USP)

•  If, for example, the distributor is handing an adventure film, they will need to look for aspects of the film which sets it aside from the other action adventure films.

What you think is the USP of each film?

•  The Kings Speech

•  Shaun of the Dead

•  Avengers Assemble

Distribution - MARKETING

Marketing is one of the most important aspects of a film's distribution and there are many different ways to market a film.

•   Posters

•  Trailers

•  Online and Mobile content

•  Special Screenings/Premiers

•  Interviews/articles

•  Merchandising

•  Festivals/Awards

EXHIBITION

Exhibition  is a release of a film marks the final stage of one part of a film's journey from idea to audience. After the cinema release, the film will then be available on several different formats. Each of these "exhibitions" of the film offer the opportunity to generate profit.

Exhibition - Film Value Chain

•  Cinema
•  DVD/BluRay/Downloads
•  Subscription Television
•  Free to air television

AFTER RESEARCH (MY FILM)

•  Production

Paramount Pictures is personally my favorite production company because it's a huge company and it also releases movies like action and horror. Paramount Pictures produced action movies like Baywatch, and produced horror movies like The Quiet Place. I also believe that my movie if it had good stars it can most definitely get produced by Paramount Pictures because, horror movies have been getting sold easily lately, and there has been many viewers for horror movies in 2021-2022.

•  Distribution

- BlumHouse Productions is personally my favorite distribution company because this distribution company has released many horror movies like, The Purge and all the Jason movies. My film concept is very similar to there films that they have released and all those films always sell good, so I believe that this will be the best company for my film 'Classroom Killer'.

•  Exhibition

- Personally the way I would want to exhibit my film is to make it in a process that it goes from Cinema and after it gets removed because of the time, it will be released on a paid app such as Hulu or HBO Max. The reason why I would prefer not making it into a rentable DVD, is because I can sell it to Hulu for way more money and ill most likely get half of the prices for the views that Hulu gets off my film.

•  Some companies that specialize to my film are Blumhouse Productions, Twisted Pictures, and Radio Silence. I feel Radio Silence most ideals to my film because I am trying to produce a horror/comedy/thriller type of film, and that's what Radio Silence produces.

•  Personally, I would rather produce with a larger studio, because larger studios will have more characters and that is better in my opinion because, scenes would be longer and the movie will overall be more interesting for horror because it's several people who can trying to find out who the murderer is (in my case).
